Project Aims:
The Southern Highlands Conservation Programme aims to conserve upland habitats and important species of flora and fauna across the mountains of southern Tanzania. These Highlands sit between Lakes Nyasa and Tanganyika on the junction of the eastern and western arms of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Montane and riverine forests, plateau grasslands and crater lakes provide water, natural resources and cultural identity to thousands of people, as well as refuge to over a hundred varieties of animals and plants found nowhere else on earth
Project Activities:
Include: Biodiversity inventories; Critical site prioritisation, Key species research;Threats analyses; Ecological monitoring; Support to Tanzania National Parks; Investigation, monitoring and management of illegal trade; Local government support; Forest enrichment planting; Forest/Grassland management; Applied conservation ecology; Training and capacity building; Management of indigenous tree nurseries; Support to local environment NGOs; Tourism development; Village development projects; Regional environmental education; GIS/RS habitat monitoring; Awareness raising; NR management, etc.
