Project Aims:
• Biomass Production Assessment Programme – Project between Cooperation Services of the French Embassy in Kenya, Group for the Development of Aerospace Remote Sensing (GDTA), a subsidiary of the French National Space Agency (CNES), Department of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing. Objective to build, within KWS, a capacity to evaluate the natural habitat in terms of available forage for herbivores, an additional layer of information to be included in the KWS database for protected areas management. Priority was therefore given to Transfer of Technology and Skills Development via training, both factors of success and sustainability of the programme. To produce a GIS database available to all KWS officers in National Parks for management strategies.
• Rhino Programme – Objectives: To facilitate realisation of these objectives, the programme has installed a database of rhino numbers and information. This will improve on monitoring of the rhinos, both for security and biological research and management. The rhino staff were also trained on radio collar assemblage, radio tracking, use of Global Positioning System (GPS), receivers and rhino post release management.
• Veterinary Services - Provide effective and rapid response to cases of sick or injured wildlife reported to the unit (need of communication technology presumed); Carrying out research on wildlife health concerns of management importance to KWS (Radio collaring of animals to support KWS researchers in monitoring and animal studies, especially, endangered species); Respond to problem animal control (PAC) requests; Develop policy documents and maintain records; develop skills.
• Security Services - Kenya's invaluable wildlife resources are the target of illegal activities such as poaching. These activities reduce the stock of bio-diversity resources. The security department ensures that all illegal activities are curbed or eliminated, thereby helping to conserve the resources.  Apart from this, the department is charged with the duty of providing physical security for all KWS assets and facilities. This active protection of KWS facilities also serves the purpose of safeguarding the visitors to the protected areas.  To co-ordinate the various activities of the service, the department provides telecommunication services and maintains an efficient communication network.
