GIS software: ArcView; Remote sensing imagery: JERS-1 L-band imagery
Support Of Technology Company:
*
Conservation/Developmant Focus:
Forest
Project Duration:
Ongoing since 2000
Project Aims:
With an area of 3,700 square kilometres - with extents of over 70km - the Iwokrama Forest presents a significant management and monitoring task. The GIS team provides the decision support system for management of the Iwokrama Forest and to disseminate the lessons learnt and technology developed through or used in Iwokrama research.
Project Activities:
The GIS team has research interests in the application of spatial models and satellite remote sensing to forest resource management. Recent studies have included:
1) Zoning plan for the Iwokrama Forest using linear programming;
2) Predictive spatial model of Greenheart distribution using logistic regression;
3) Delineation of understory seasonal flooding using canopy-penetrating high-resolution JERS-1 L-band imagery from the Global Rain Forest Mapping Project (National Space Development Agency of Japan in collaboration with NASA JPL.).
Iwokrama is also very active in the development of GIS in Guyana. In 2001 it developed recommendations for a National Policy on Geographic Information and set up the GIS Forest Resources Information System of the Guyana Forestry Commission, by providing direction on priorities, equipment, staffing, protocols, etc. and training in GIS. Iwokrama continues to work towards the establishment of a National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), as part of a Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI).
