Project Duration:
Ongoing since 2002
Project Aims:
The integrated management project of the basin of the Lower Tempisque River is dedicated to conservation and the sustainable use of the natural resources of the region by focusing on four key areas: compiling environmental-biophysical, social, and economic data as part of a geographic information system; training for local government officials, community groups, small and medium-sized producers in new production techniques for crop irrigation; monitoring water quality in impact areas; and the restoration of ecosystems. The specific aim of the project is to implement specific measures to conserve the ecological integrity of the Lower Tempisque River basin and to help strengthen institutions, communities and local governments.
Project Activities:
Established a geographic information system with more than 250 layers of digital information.  Co-ordination of work between institutions and communities.
Project Results:
Successful restoration of Palo Verde National Park wetlands.
Most of the GIS information is available to those interested in the Palo Verde National Park and the Tempisque & Bebedero Watersheds, including researchers, students and the general public.
Future Steps:
Integration in the geographic information system of bio-physical and socio-economic information of the Tempisque River basin, including the need for information from state agencies, the communities and the local governments of the region.
