Are you attending the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) Conference? If so, you are eligible to apply for a place on BP Conservation Partnership and Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS) funded "Introductory Course in GIS".
The BP Conservation Programme (http://conservation.bp.com/) and the Society for Conservation GIS (http://www.scgis.org/) are providing a 5 day introductory course in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The course runs from the 6 – 10 July following the SCB meeting. This course will be aimed at people with little or no experience in GIS.
Over the 5 days the course will: 1) Provide a basic overview of the potential application of GIS in conservation science 2) Provide the attendee with the skills to produce maps 3) Highlight approaches to basic data collection (GPS, digitising, sourcing data) 4) Offer an introduction into habitat mapping, distribution mapping and basic spatial modelling.
The trainers are experienced in providing GIS training to international audiences and the course content will be developed to incorporate attendees’ needs and interests (attendees will be encouraged to bring case studies that can be used in the training). By the end of the course the attendees will have a basic understanding of GIS and will have developed skills that can be built on through continued use of GIS.
The cost of the 5-day course will be US$150 for applicants from low and middle-income countries, and US$300 for those from high income countries. Participants will need to make their own arrangements for accomodation and food.
