This practical workshop would show teachers and expedition organisations how to create virtual fieldwork using Google Earth as a template. It will involve hands-on experience with digital cameras and GPS units creating mini-fieldwork projects in Hyde Park. Participants will then be shown how this data can be transformed into a virtual journey using Google Earth.
There is a growing need for virtual expeditions and fieldwork to complement outdoor experiences for pupils. Barriers of time, effort and costs make field trips more difficult to put on. It is therefore necessary to enhance the value of those that do take place. Creating virtual trips using Google Earth means that the trips you run with pupils can be shared with other classes and future years in school. Previously inaccessible destinations can now be visited virtually with the click of a mouse.
If you want to:
• ensure your exam students have a detailed and exciting record of their fieldwork to refer to;
• or you want to share your own expedition with the classroom;
• or you are a teacher wanting to enhance the way your pupils interact with the world;
• or you simply want to be able to share journeys virtually for those who cannot go – younger pupils, different classes, parents or a wider audience;
this course will give you the tools to accomplish all of these.
